Embed Images in Ill. CS3

When I place a tif, eps, psd image in Illustrator CS3 it automatically embeds the image. How can I stop, I can't seem to find the option to stop.

Check the 'Link' option at the bottom of the Place dialog box.

And, in case you were not aware, you can change to linking after the fact using the Relink option in the flyout menu of the Links palette/panel.

You can also drag images from the Finder or Bridge directly into your Illy file. They will be linked unless you hold down the Caps Lock key, in which case they will be embedded.
