Create more than one link to a document

I am a RoboHelp 6 user. I can only link to a Word document or PDF once, in other words if I create more than one link to a document, the second link is broken. I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me how I can get around this.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I am using RoboHelp for Word. I'd like to give you an example of a typical scenario:

On one page I Have created a list of forms and created a link to each form (PDF and Word documents). On another page, consisting of paragraphs of text where I refer to some of the same forms, I would like to create a link. When I do just that, the first link breaks. It doesn't make any sense.

So sorry, but I'm out of ideas and will have to leave you to find someone that uses RoboHelp for Word. Unfortunately, you are using a product that has an ever shrinking user base. Many have moved on to RoboHelp HTML. You may wish to consider switching as well. Here's why.

• There are more users that are familiar with it and are able to help you troubleshoot.
• You are creating HTML output.
• The editing interface is very ''Word like'', so there is very little (if any) learning curve.

Creating HTML output from Word based documents will always be a trade off and sometimes a struggle. It's like trying to extract water from oil. (IMNSHO of course)

Licensing stopped working: Does anyone...

For the 3rd time in as many months I'm having to uninstall, clean and reinstall CS 3 Web Premium suite.

Error message on all applications:

''You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting you IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help.''

This is ridiculous... it seems like hundreds of customers are suffering the same problem from looking at forums and blogs.

Surely a company with such a reputation can provide a fix for this problem. I'm not rich, infact I am currently unemployed, but I invested a great deal of money in what I 'had' regarded as the best software.

However, having to go through this lengthy process of uninstalling, cleaning and reinstalling every few weeks is becoming a real pain in the butt. It takes hours...

I am getting no where in trying to get answers.

Can anyone tell me who I can complain to in order to get some action on this?

Can anyone advise if there is a perminant fix or what Adobe is doing about it!?

No, adobe is only concerned if you have paid for one of their support packages. If you haven't, you're SOL.

I have a component with a datagrid. I can access this from the parent application as step0.chosenList.dataProvider, and another datagrid in the main app can display it if its dataprovder is set to {step0.chosenList.dataProvider}.

However, I have a pop-up window which is a separate titleWindow component which also has a grid that needs to display this same data.聽 It doesn't recognize {step0.chosenList.dataProvider}.

Initial window position on MacOs

I am developing an application that requires to show some notification windows when certain events occur. I did the notification windows using the mx:window element. In MS Windows they work perfectly and I set their initial position using the mx:window 'x' and 'y' property. But on MacOs the windows always appear on the center of the screen, no matter how I set their parameters, I've tried everything I can think of and I've searched on google and on AIR's documentation.

Anyone knows how to fix this so that my application can be cross platform? Any help would be really appreciated.

That's weird indeed, I was starting to think it was an Air bug.

Does it work for you using the mx:window container or do you use a different one? Is there any other property that you change for this? Do you change anything on the properties file in order for this to work for you?.

all the changes I make are via as3.

I use a window, full scree, transparent, x and y = 0. Therein I place my notification messages.

That's what I was missing! trying with a window that initializes in fullscreen. Although on MacOs if I set it to fullscreen it hides the dock, however I tried setting the window as maximized and it now works perfectly! Thank you Cesare, I hadn't thought about that option before.

How to find out the filename of...

I got the filename of javascript and pathname of javascript(not the active document file name) using the below code in illustrator cs3.

var path = $.fileName;

But my problem was if i run the javascript through ''extendscript toolkit'' i got it correctly. But if i run my script through illustrator cs3 application(File-%26gt;Scripts-%26gt;test.jsx) i got some integer value only(did not get the javascript filepath and filename). Kindly advice how to get the javascript file name and file path in windows platform through illustrator cs3 javascript. Please help me.

How to use a link bar or navigation bar...

My app has a link bar in an Application Control bar that is bound to the view stack of the steps in my application.

I would like to use this as a mechanism to show the user which step he is on and how many are left, but NOT to click on it to navigate between steps.聽 I have provided wizard-like buttons to step navigation.

How can I have the link bar not respond to clicks, or, if not, programmatically disable certain steps in it (e.g. ''step 2'' not available until I say so)?

OK, I have decided it might be easier to use a repeater with buttons in it, such as:

Banner distorted when displayed in a...

I've created a banner on Photoshop, imported a logo and put some text in and it's all as I want it.

However, when doing a check to see how it would look in a web browser, in both safari and Firefox the banner is distorted and doesn't look great.聽 If I do Cntrl-A to make the image quality better, it appears how I'd like it to appear.聽 How do I get it to appear like that first time without having to Cntrl-A it?

It's driving me mad!

Are the proportions of the image the correct size when you inserted the image into DW, you didn't resize it or anything like that?

However, I've now managed to sort it by simply saving the banner as a png as it was a jpg before.

Shouldn't really make a difference whether you saved it as a jpg or a gif (though the quality would depend on the finished image of course).聽 But you did say distorted, so it sounded like it had been resized when you 'placed' it into DW.

When you insert an insert an image, you will generally see the size dimensions of the image in the code, just make sure they are the same size as the actual image itself.聽 :-)

Acrobat 9 - Attach to email - missing...

I just upgraded to CS4 from CS3. In Acrobat 8 when I am viewing a PDF if I go to the File menu and select (Attach to Email) I am taken to my mail app and an email was created with the attachment and the subject line is filled in with the file name. With Acrobat 9 when I try to do the same thing it does not include the subject line. Is there some sort of preference I can change to get it to include a subject line?

I send a lot of PDFs to customers and that feature in Acrobat 8 is a convenient time saver.

I think that what you're looking for is a control that allows you to present text with preset values, you could use聽 a mx:Text or mx:TextArea and css to format the controls appereance or just using in-line properties.

Firefox button rollover issues

Strange one... I have a flash file that works in every browser, except Firefox.聽 In Firefox, it appears that the Y coordinate is ''off''. You can only use the button when you are approximately 200 pixels down the screen.聽 I've tested in Chrome, Safari and IE 7 with no problems.聽 Any ideas?聽 FYI..the only other info I've been able to find may point to wmode, which in this case I have to set it to transparant so the drop down boxes above the flash movie stays ''over'' the video.聽 Here is the link.

聽聽聽聽 A setting of ''transparent'' does allow Flash content to appear under other HTML elements, but you really only need ''transparent'' when the Flash content includes transparency.聽 WMODE is known to be a bit dicey (has been since its introduction), but anecdotal evidence suggests that ''opaque'' is a bit less problematic, and both of those -- transparent and opaque -- let your layer your SWFs behind CSS menus.

聽聽聽聽 Not sure if WMODE is the cause for your issue, but opaque is worth a shot.

Ok..just to make it more confusing. When I go to the direct link for the file, it works, perfectly in Firefox. You see.. the way it is published, the HTML, CSS, Javascript generated by Lectora is on one server, the video and flash files are on another. When I publish and view locally in Firefox...no problem. But once I move the HTML and associated files up to server, it creates this issue. So, I think we've boiled it down to an issue with the way Lectora is publishing it. I'm moving over to that forum. Ok, so the company I work for doesn't want any more looping banner ads anymore.聽 Now they want me to stop the animation at 15 seconds and create a Replay button so the user can click on it to start the animation again.聽 I know how to make the button but I don't know the Actionscript to make it go to frame one and start again and I'm also not sure how to incorporate this with the Stop action.聽 Kinda new at this so any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi,

I can see on the internet a way of creating a dashed line that follows a wavy path by choosing brush, altering spacing to e.g. 200% then adjusting dynamics to squish the shape flatter, then angle jitter 0% and control method to Direction, then draw a path and r/click in paths and stroke path, but I need to make such for a 2px wide line drawn with pencil tool. I need the dashes 12px long. How is it done ? What settings work as I cannot seem to use that method at all but perhaps I am doing it wrong ?

I wish Photoshop had by now created an option called dashed lines allowing use of brush or pencil tool to leave a trail of dashes. Such a fundamental drawing thing and nothing easy or obvious. My raster drawing has many straight and curved lines needing redrawing to such.

Illustrator is made for drawing precise stuff, not Photoshop and it's very easy to do that sort of thing in it

In Photoshop you'll need to define a brush that looks like one of the dashes, change it's spacing and then stroke the path using the Brush Tool and then keep mucking around with the spacing value until you get what you want. I hope that there's a better way than that (in Photoshop) because it's not a very efficient way to work

You can pick a square brush that is 12 pixels in size, change the roundness to be whatever percentage of 12 will give you 2 pixels, and adjust the spacing to greater than 100%. You probably will want to go into the brush options in Shape Dynamics and change the Angle Jitter to Direction so that the brush will turn as your strokes turn. From there you could simply brush in your lines, or make paths as you were and stroke the paths.

Retrieving field names on a form

Hi,

I have used the below code to retieve field names from a form with Acrobat 5. This has worked fine, we have now upgraded to Acrobat 9 and the same code errors when executing the line 'Set fields = AFORMAUT.flelds' I am getting a type mismatch error. This is a simple funtion in VB6 which retrieves the field names and their associated types in a comma seperated string?

Does anyone know why this code does not work in Acrobat 9? or is there a better way to achieve the same results with Acrobat 9?

Just looking at the sample in the Acrobat 9 SDK and it has two references included in it.

Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Type Library ( as expected )

AFormAut 1.0 Type Library

the AFormAut library would appear to be the one that is needed for the object you are using, I don't have access to Acrobat 5 sdk, but I think it all used to be one library.

Just thought it was worth mentioning so you could make sure you have all the references you need,

Thanks for the replies, I have since found that to get the field lists in Acrobat 9 then AcroExchAVDOC.BringToFront and AcroExchApp.Hide need to be used. As without these the Acrobat object thinks there is no form loaded. I have put the AxcroExchApp.Hide in as when your automating you don't want the acrobat program to be shown - there is a slight flash - but it is minimal.

This seems to be the only solution unless, anybody has got any other suggestions?

Premier does not use all my CPU Cores...

Hello all!

I have built a dual quad xeon video editing workstation for my work but when we do any exports or renders the computer never uses more than 30% of its total CPU resources.聽 I have tried various codecs and settings but it always maxes out at 30% which is very frustrating.聽 By turning off 6 of the 8 cores in task manager affinity settings i can get both the cores to run at 100% which equals 30% CPU time.聽 If you turn on the other cores the load is then spread among them and the total CPU utilisation never goes higher than 30%.聽 From reading this forum i know other people have all their cores maxed out when rendering or exporting.

Full system specs are:

Tyan Tempest i5000XT

2x Quad Xeon

4GB DDR2 RAM

Radeon 1950 Pro

Creative X-Fi Plat pro

Windows XP (32bit) SP3

Adobe Production Suite CS3

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I must point out that different codecs have different capabilities. Some codecs cannot use more than one core to encode while others can.

Have you tested exporting to multiple different formats?

I'm afraid I don't know. I would suspect that exporting to DV AVI would use all processors, but hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in.

Illustrator won't quit

Since about a week ago, I cannot get Illustrator CS3 to quit, either using File -%26gt; Quit or clicking the X-box at top right. The palettes all go away, but then it just sits there doing nothing and the only way to get out of it is to go into Process Manager and shut it down manually.

What gives? Any ideas?

Did you recently install any new software? I'm aware of a few tools that block global OS functions (such as the close window x), but leaving the program via the File menu should work. It's a different way of calling specific functions. Another thing to know: Do you run AI alone or with other programs also open?

No you don't have to know Flash. Certainly, begin comfortable with Flash timeline and drawing tools won't help you since they don't exist in Flex.

But if you are already comfortable with ActionScript, you'll have a head start.

The Flex in a Week tutorials are pretty good - although I found Day 5 to be very messy with some of the exercises having errors.

You can also try Lynda.com for similar lessons that take a different approach but will teah you essentially the same things. The earlier Lynda.com lessons give better information on how to work with the Flex UI.

So far I've not found any tutorials that cover the use of the debugger in detail, nor have I found any that include information on the most important thing about any development tool - excuse me while I shout.

no video after rendering

I'm experimenting with ripping dvd's into premiere and adding menus then rendering it back as dvd, mpeg, and flash.

I have a video I recorded with my dvd recorder, 1hr15mins, when I rip it into premiere, it comes in as 3 different files totaliing about 20 minutes.

When I render as mpeg, I get audio but no video.

What am I missing?

Are you putting the DVD in your DVD drive and using the PE7 media downloader to import the vob files from the DVD? If so do you see the 3 different files in your organizer? And when you say rendering to MPEG do you mean exporting to MPEG? So placing the 3 files on the timeline and then using the Share option to export to MPEG.

Regarding your importing, PE7 sometimes does have issues importing the vobs from a DVD. It is better to download them to your hard-drive and join them in one operation using the Command Prompt. This will download the complete DVD and resolve any audio sync issues you may later find. Once on your hard-drive use the Get Media from Files and Folders in PE7 to import the video. Did you try using the Command Prompt in my first post? This should solve your problems.

If you play the files on your hard-drive in a mediaplayer are they the correct length? If they are, but they are not in Premiere Elements you may need to convert them to DV-AVI, which is a more compatible format for Premiere Elements.

I used the cmd prompt to join the vob files together, but PE7 still gave me short files.聽 Mpeg Streamclip was the only solution to convert to avi that worked for me.聽 It converted my 1.25gb vob file to a 10gb avi. Is that normal?聽 It took a while for streamclip to render, and a while for PE7 to import that 10gb file too, but I've just completed the burning of the dvd.聽 It plays fine on my screen, though it's a bit blurry. I hope that's because my lcd screen has a higher resolution than a tv?? I'll play it on a tv soon and see how it looks.

I'm rendering as flash now to upload online and see how it looks there.

DV-AVI is 13GB per hour so the video files are large. Your DVD resolution will be 720x480... so if this is played full screen on a computer monitor it will look blurry.

I noticed there is a quality setting in the streamclip program, it defaulted to 50%.聽 The instructions did not mention moving that, does that, or anything else in the conversion process going to avi and then again PE rendering to flash or dvd do anything to lower quality?

I must admit I have always left the slider at 50%. I guess you would get better quality by increasing this to 100%... all I can imagine is that it would take longer to encode. Only other important thing to check is that the Field Dominace is set to Lower Field First... if this is set to Upper Field First the DVD playback will be jittery or jerky.

As long as your video is around 1 hour the DVD will burn at it's top quality setting of 8Mb/s, as you exceed 1 hour the bitrate is reduced to fit the video to the DVD.

For Flash, once you have picked an export preset you can go into Advanced and increase the bitrate and therefore quality if you like. However this will increase the file size.

Well a DVD can hold a lot more then 2 hours... it all depends on the quality. The DVD standard sets a maximum combined birate for video and signal of 9.8Mb/s... in PE7 the maximum video bitrate is 8 Mb/s (leaving room for the audio) and this equates to a little over 1 hour of video. Many DVD manufacturers themselves quote on the DVD packaging: ''1 at high quality and 2 hours at standard quality''... so for 2 hours the bitrate is reduced to around 5Mb/s.

Ok, that makes sense.

If it interests you to know, I re-encoded my vob file to avi at 100%.聽 it did take longer to render, the file size was the same, and I couldn't tell a difference in quality by quick inspection playing in windows media player.

I work for a company that distributes e-books in PDF format using Adobe Content Server. Some of our customers keep getting the above error since we upgraded to ACS4. I've looked at the technote, but it didn't really answer my question of why this happens, since:

a) We have upgraded to ACS4, yet our server seems to still be sending out ebx.etd files occasionally rather than urllink.acsm.

b) It doesn't happen all the time, unlike what the technote says; the same ebx.etd file that gives a customer the above error works fine for us when we download an e-book on a separate computer.

So I suppose my question is, is there any other problem that could cause this error message?

Since you specified Flex Builder, I'll assume you meant the IDE.聽 As far as I knew the enter key will create a new line.聽 Whether that sends a line feed, or carriage return, or both was dependent upon operating system.

If I understand correctly, Windows OS uses both Carriage Return and Line Feed.聽 I thought the MAC OS used only Line Feed.聽 If you're using Microsoft Word on Windows you can do a 'hard' return using the enter key, or a soft return using the control Enter.聽 This does not appear to carry over the Eclipse / Flex Builder, though.聽 And even if it did, I'm not sure why it would matter.聽 The important thing is that you're able to separate your code to multiple lines, right?

I've got a document with bl**dy annoying background images, or watermarks.
I've tried to remove them as per Acrobat CS4 Help, but they are still there.

I can select the image, so I guess it must be a separate object.

Installing a MAC projector

I have been a user of Director MX 2004 and recently upgraded to Director 11. I have subsequently created a program using Director 11 on my Windows XP pc and published it as a windows projector and a Mac projector. I have tested the windows executable and it works fine. I just picked up a mini Mac and would like to install the mac projecor files/folders on the Mac. I was looking for some help and/or step-by-step instructions on how to copy the Mac published folders and files created by Director on the Windows XP pc so that I dont goof up the installation/file transfer from the pc to the Mac. Since the mini mac does not have a CD or DVD drive I was planning on using a jump drive to do the file transfer from my PC to the Mac. Any help would be appreciated.

Installing a MAC projector

Unless you have a custom made mini, you do have a disc drive. It is most likely a DVD drive, it may be a super drive. In any case, you need to get the Mac-specific files: the projector, the xtras, and the common files that you may have: dir or dxr files, external audio, video, text files, etc. When you copy the files over to the mac, and start the projector, you'll get an error message if any files are missing.

Issue with getting handle to the swf...

I have a jsp file which has the %26lt;object%26gt; tag to include the Flex swf file on the jsp. I have certain functions exposed to javascript (using ExternalInterface.callback) that can be used in the jsp. But when I try to get the handle to the swf object using document[swfId] or window.document[swfId] or document.getElementById(swfId) ..it returns back NULL..

This works on some browers and doesn't work on some. I even tried to reinstall my browser but in vain.

Any someone provide me with some pointers on this ?

I have successfully synched 18,975 files to Photoshop.com from the 20,684 files (photos and avi video clips) in my PSE7 library. After having recently stopped and restarted the synch, I now have 19,736 files pending synchronization. (I don't know how that happened!) What's worse, the synch is stalled - that is, although all arrows are green, there are no files being uploaded to Photoshop.com.

I have tried applying a new tag, as suggested by other posts. I've also created a new album to be synched, and put a few photos in it. I see them in the pending synchronization batch, but nothing is happening!

I have plenty of storage space available on Photoshop.com. I am using Vista 32-bit OS.

I would be SO grateful for a clue as to what to try next!

Flash Live Stream - setMode v Screen...

Hi,

I have a 2-way video conference running at 640*480, no problem using FCS 3.

What I would like to do is have my camera sending out 640 * 480 to viewer but only show at 120 * 90 on the my own screen.

Right now both in and out streams are displayed at the same size.

Fixed.

Do not use new Video(640,480) as it messes up the outgoing stream as well. Or in my case Video(120,90).

Use

then set the width and height to what you want.

As always the mistake is between the chair and the keyBoard. :-)

I am using Creative Suite CS4.聽 In CS3 I created two custom XMP metadata pages that I used to add information to RAW, TIF, PSD files.聽 The resulting custom panel could be seen and used in Bridge and Extensis Portfolio.聽 In CS4 that all changed.聽 I can create the GUI part of the panel using Flex Builder 3.

My questions are 1) How do you get the controls to work (combo boxes with fixed lists, fields for text data and a note field), 2) how do I get the data from the image file, have it update when a field changes, read it back to the image file when closed, and 3) how do I get it to work in Bridge CS4 properly and also be readable to Extensis Portfolio.

I have attached the CS3 files that were used to create the panels in CS3.

J'ai cr茅茅 un bouton intitul茅 ''Pointures''. Ce bouton, au clic, permet d'ajouter la commande au panier. Le Numeric Stepper affichant les tailees 34 脿 41.

J'ai utilis茅, entre autres, le code suivant :

1) Voici le probl猫me : si je mets la taille 34 au NS, puis au clic du bouton ''Pointures'', le panier indique ''taille undefined''

Si je fais de m锚me pour toutes les autres pointures, cela fonctionne bien....

De plus si je reviens sur la taille 34, au clic, la taille 34 est prise en compte cette fois-ci...

J'avoue ne rien comprendre.

2) Je voudrais cr茅er un bouton reset dans le panier afin que le client ait la possibilit茅 de faire une remise 脿 z茅ro en cas d'erreur... Je n'y arrive pas...

Migration issue

I have Acrobat Pro 7.0 on a computer that is being decommissioned.聽 I am setting up a new one and need to move the Acrobat to that one, but cannot locate the installation disk.

Is it possible to move the program from my old to my new computer?

No. It must be re-installed. You should locate your serial number, de-activate the copy on the old computer. Try to find another person within your organisation that has the Acrobat 7 CD. You can contact Adobe Customer Service to see if they have replacement disks available as another possibility.

DW upgrade question

Okay here goes, I had DW7 then upgraded to DW8 x-husband moved and took DW7 with him (serial # too) I attempted to move DW8 upgrade to a new computer but now need DW7 serial#. Apparently I am up a creek about that issue. However, can I purchase another upgrade, DW cs4, even though I was never able to activate DW8 on new computer? When I spoke with Adobe they suggested upgrading but at the time I didn't realize my predicament (no serial #) and don't want to 'try' it when the cost is so high. Thanks for any input!

In all honesty, I'd doubt it.聽 If x-husband has the original disks, you can't piggy-back off that license to get an upgrade - he has the original copy.

I'd suggest getting in touch with support again, explain your situation and see what they have to say.

I realise contact support may be a pain due to the waiting time, but it's better than buying the upgrade and then finding out that you can't use it anyway.

Securing form attachments

I am using the submit button to email that allows users to email the PDF form by saving to their desktops and using internet mail such as GMail or any desktop based clients. My form has a permissions password with 128 bit AES but there is NO document open password.

Is my form secure when the form is transported by email? If not, how can the date in the form be made secure?

i have used a flash animation (that was given in default captivate library). i want to loop it but when i click in properties. i cant see any loop option. not even in options tab as mentioned in captivate help.

I'm working on improving my Flash skills -- so, can't speak ''with Authoritah!'' (sorry, Cartman) -- but, a .swf's looping ability is, I do believe, controlled internally within the file itself.

Which animation are you using?聽 Some of the animations in the Gallery loop more (or, at all) than others.聽 Some of the animations' source .fla files are included in Captivate and, thus, can be edited in Flash (assuming you have access to that - or, are able to download for a 30-day trial).

As a possibility, did you try to expand the animation's duration on the Timeline?聽 Maybe, by having more time to play, it would loop a bit for you...?

In addition to what Joe offered up I'll add this.

If you are creating an animation in Flash to drop into a Captivate, make sure you animate by creating a Movie Clip. As I understand it, you may animate in Flash by manipulatng the main timeline or by creating a Movie Clip. If you animate on the Main Timeline, it won't loop in Captivate. But if you animate via a Movie Clip, it will.

Actually i didn't make an animation in flash. i just used one, given in captivate library.

i noticed that this one is not loopable but many others are.....

but even when i use one animation with loop showing in options and i enable it, it does not loop.

i think this is because i have placed one click box to stop the slide in the end as i want my users to go to next slide only by clicking next button.

It's been my experience that if you pause the slide the animation will simply loop endlessly.

I suppose it may depend upon exactly where you are pausing the slide.

I was trying out to create a pdf form which can consume a Web Service. I am building this pdf form from Adobe Live Designer. But I am not getting the expected result from this. Quick XML Question...

Hi,

I was curious how I can hide the content of my XML files from internet users. Basically if I type in the url http://www.mysite.com/XML/file.xml, the content of that file is displayed in the browser. I do not want that to happen. How can I prevent that info from being loaded? Should I set permissions for that folder? Is there some other orocess I am unaware of to do this?

Firstly, I'm aware this probably isn't the best place to be posting about training course, but didn't rally think it fitted anywhere else.

My company have asked if I would like to go on a Web Development course. Obviously I said YES!

But now I am tasked with working out what would be the most useful things to learn and where?

I would class myself as a great graphic designer / beginner to better than average web designer. The type of things they would like my to be able to implement is online surveys, gather customer information, customer databases and so forth. Basically I would be implementing the marketing departments, well, marketing!

So I thought I should be looking at PHP %26amp; SQL? Maybe some XML? What would others say? Also I'm looking for a reliable company, any suggestions?

Ideally in the Bristol, Gloucestershire or Birmingham area, however London would be fine.

I'm the instructor for the Dreamweaver CS4 - Getting Started three-day course offered by Highlander (http://highlander.co.uk), an Adobe authorized training centre. I normally teach at Highlander's training centre in London, but also do training off base (in February, I taught a course in Leeds). The course I teach is described as ''designed for those with no previous experience of webpage / application development''. As a result, it starts from the basics, but gets into quite advanced territory by the end of the three days, particularly if participants already have a reasonable knowledge of web development (as many of them do).

Highlander also offers a PHP/MySQL course. Although I specialize in PHP/MySQL, the course is not taught by me. However, Highlander has discussed the possibility of me doing a more advanced Dreamweaver course that includes PHP/MySQL. Offering such a course would depend on sufficient people signing up for it. You might want to ask your company to inquire about arranging such a course, even though it's not currently listed on the training schedule (the person to contact is the Managing Director, Andy Gardiner).

In case you don't know who I am, I'm an Adobe Certified Instructor for Dreamweaver and the author of a series of books on Dreamweaver, PHP, and MySQL (http://foundationphp.com).

Of course, there are other training companies in the UK that others might be able to recommend.

My previous employer used a company called Transmedia (Bristol and London based) to get staff up to speed in Dreamweaver CS4 mainly and other Adobe and Apple products. All my colleagues were very satisfied with the quality of training.

Print slides

Hi everybody,

I'm currently working on a captivate 4 project. The user is supposed to answer an open question and print it. I inserted the slide a large text entry and a print widget. The project size is 1024 x 768, and when I printed the slide it turned out to be too big, and half of it was cut out. I changed the orientation to
''landscape'', tried to play around with other settings - but to no avail.

So I created a copy and rescaled it to 800 x 600. This time the paper looks just fine if I print ''landscape'', but the 800 x 600 version looks too small. Is there any way I can print the slide nicely from the 1024 x 768 version?

(I also thought of making a print button that opens a word document, and then the user can write the answer there and print it, but I'm not sure it's a good solution)

I'd appreciate any kind of help.

TEXT gets cut off when entered in PDF...

In Acrobat professional I created a form textfield box in the PDF file. When I test filling this box in as an end user the text always moves up and gets cut off. I've been playing with this all night. I see no way of getting it to stay put.

Try going into Properties and instead of using Auto for Font size choose a specific size. double-clicking on the given field will bring up preferences.

Did you try reducing the size of the font, or using a different style font.

Weird. Seems to have only worked when I brought the font all the way down to 16 pt, which is not what I'm looking for on this project.

Is there no way to have the font larger than that. What do you get with a large font on your end?

The font style has no effect on it either way.

Check to see in your Text Field Properties box. under the Options Tab, if the ''Multi-Line'' box is on. If so, click it off. You can now set your font to Automatic sizing.

I have none of those boxes clicked in Options actually.

After entering the text, and clicking away, the text seems to slide upward and goes beyond the top border.

But now that you mentioned ticking Multi-line ON can be a somewhat weird solution.

Resizing the textfield in layout view has no effect. If I make the textfield a multiline and then as I type into the box, I skip a line, when the text slides up it doesnt go beyond the top border. A silly solution at best. http://screencast.com/t/ANy9rVqngaq

What Font are you using?

Using standard fonts. I tried Helvetica and Times New Roman.

Is a large font working on your end?

Hmm. Courier seems to have worked! I may be stuck to this font then.. I'll try others.

Verdana worked too. Maybe there's something wrong with helvetica and Times new Roman. I'll play with others.

I just want to make sure I'm using fonts that are installed on the end user's machine.

Couior is a good font to setle on. Its used on pretty much all Platforms. Mac, Windows, Unix, Linux.

Pop-up Menu Transparency

I've just made a Blu-ray pop-up menu with a black background and white text. The highlight is a white underscore that appears in front of the selected piece of text. My problem is that all of the underscores appear transparent even when not selected.

It looks fine in the preview window however.

Any ideas what this could be?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Highlight layers should remain transparent in the Menu editor unless you manually switch them on (there's a button at the bottom of the frame labeled ''Show Button Highlights'', or something like that...don't have Encore open in front of me).

Of course, button highlights should appear when you enter Preview mode and select a button, or if your burn a BD and test it in a player - but not appear when buttons are unselected.

Pop-up Menu Transparency

Yeah, everything works fine within encore. The highlights only appear when I select show highlights as they should.

But, when I burn the BD, instead of being invisible (ie you just see the black background) they are visible and transparent (ie they are 'punching' holes through the black background and showing the film behind them.

Difficult to diagnose without seeing the PSD file. Can you post it here?

Possible to concatenate variables?

I wonder if anybody Captivate wizards out there can help me

My aim is simple in principle, but I've been pulling my hair out trying to get it to work.

I'm using the certificate widget, which requires a variable 'v_Name' to fill in the name on the certificate.

However, I also want separate variables for first and lastname so I have more flexibility e.g. 'Well done John!' etc

Here's what I tried:

TEB 1 - obtains a variable 'firstname' (for this example pretend it's John)

TEB 2 - obtains a varialbe 'lastname' (for this example pretent it's Smith)

Before my quiz, I have a 'are you sure you want to continue?' slide.

In the 'Yes' button I have embedded an advanced action:

v_Name = fname + sname

Go to next slide

Of course, when this is done the certificate at the end reads 'JohnSmith'

The advanced action dialog only allows you to add two variables so it's not like I could add firstname + 'space' + lastname.

To get around this i created another variable called 'fnamespace'

fname value is set to $$fname$$ + '' ''

I then sneakily tried to amend my advance action to:

v_Name = fnamespace + sname

Go to next slide

In the certificate, this returns '$$fname$$ + '' ''Smith

So my long winded question is, does Captivate understand spaces - is this possible? Because at the moment, it takes things literally and doesn't understand I'm trying to add a space. I've previously done something similar in Excel which works perfectly.

Thanks for the reply - so close!

I tried creating the space variable - I assigned the value by pressing my spacebar. However, Captivate seems to interpret a space as a value of '0'.

I now get John0Smith showing in the certificate.

As for fname + '' '' + sname, captivate also seems to interpret '' '' as a 0

The same goes for when I try to set the value for the variable 'space' to '' ''

Any other ideas would be appreciated - I've tried pretty much all combinations I can think of.

In case anybody is interested, I have figured a workaround for this:

It doesn't seem possible to set a space by itself as a variable.

So for the second TEB for lastname, I went to options and inserted a space in the 'default text' field. I then made sure that 'retain text' was checked.

This results in a lastname variable which already has a space at the beginning.

Then, it's a simply matter of setting v_Name = firstname + lastname !
